MYMENSINGH/DHAKA, DECEMBER 23, 2025 – A horrific incident of mob violence has once again shaken Bangladesh. Dipu Chandra Das, a 27-year-old garment factory worker from the minority Hindu community, was brutally beaten to death and his body set on fire by a mob in the Mymensingh district.
The incident, which occurred late last week, has sparked widespread outrage and drawn sharp condemnation from the international community, including India and the United States.
Details of the Horrific Incident According to police reports and the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), the incident took place in the Bhaluka area.
- The Allegation: Dipu was accused of “blasphemy” following a dispute at his workplace, a textile factory.
- The Betrayal: Investigations revealed that factory supervisors allegedly forced Dipu to resign and then handed him over to an agitated mob instead of protecting him or calling the police.
- The Violence: The mob beat him to death, hung his body from a tree, and later dragged it to the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway where they set it on fire.
- No Evidence found: The RAB has officially stated that no evidence of blasphemy was found against the victim, calling the allegations baseless.
Crackdown and Arrests Following a directive from the interim government Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, security forces have launched a crackdown.
- So far, 12 individuals have been arrested, including the factory’s floor in-charge and quality manager who allegedly incited the mob.
- A murder case has been filed against 150 unidentified people by the victim’s brother.

Context of Unrest This lynching comes amidst a volatile atmosphere in Bangladesh. The country has seen rising tensions following the recent arrest of Hindu leader Chinmoy Krishna Das on sedition charges, and the subsequent killing of a lawyer, Saiful Islam Alif, during protests in Chattogram last month. Security has been tightened across major cities to prevent further communal flare-ups.
