Elephant that gives to quatar

BHAIRAHAWA, DECEMBER 18, 2025 – In a landmark moment for Nepal’s “wildlife diplomacy,” two home-grown Asian elephants, Rudrakali and Khagendra Prasad, have safely touched down in Qatar, marking the first time Nepal has ever gifted tuskers to a foreign nation.

The pair departed yesterday evening from the Gautam Buddha International Airport in Bhairahawa aboard a special Qatar Airways cargo flight (Boeing 777F). This historic transfer fulfills a pledge made during the State Visit of the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, to Nepal in April 2024.

The Envoys from Chitwan Both elephants were born and raised at the Elephant Breeding Center in Khorsor, Chitwan National Park.

  • Rudrakali: A 7-year-old female, known for her calm demeanor.
  • Khagendra Prasad: A 6-year-old male, described by caretakers as playful and intelligent.

Before their flight, a touching farewell ceremony was held in Sauraha, where mahouts and locals garlanded the calves, bidding them an emotional goodbye. They were transported to Bhairahawa in specially designed trucks before boarding the flight to Doha.

A New Home in the Desert Upon arrival in Doha, the elephants were transferred to the world-class Al Khor Family Park & Zoo. Qatari authorities have constructed a specialized, climate-controlled habitat to ensure the elephants adapt comfortably to the desert climate.

“This is not just a transfer of animals; it is a symbol of the deep trust and friendship between Nepal and Qatar,” said a Ministry of Forests spokesperson. To ensure a smooth transition, two Nepali mahouts and a veterinarian have accompanied the elephants and will remain in Qatar for a month to train local handlers.

Why It Matters While Nepal has previously gifted one-horned Rhinos to countries like the UK, USA, and China, this is the first instance of gifting elephants. The move highlights Nepal’s success in wildlife conservation and its growing soft power on the global stage.
